Milton Keynes turned 50 on January 23rd, 2017. It was my great pleasure to manage the project to create the official 50th Anniversary Cake from the initial concept to agreed design…..through sugar detailing, assembly, decoration….and finally, the cutting.
The cake was a community project. Milton Keynes Council who commissioned the cake wanted it to bring the community together, build legacy and educate people about Milton Keynes.
Built on a 6ft by 4ft base, the project needed to reflect the essence of Milton Keynes, including….
• replicas of the landmark buildings – past and present
• local industry
• popular green spaces
• key stakeholders and personalities over the last 50 years!
• ….and of course the concrete cows!
The cake was made from the finest ingredients and sponsored by John Lewis. Flavours included Chocolate Mud, Curry, Carrot Cake, Fruit, Pear and Ginger... to name but a few….
The cake was built in situ in Middleton Hall, Central Milton Keynes, on Friday 20th January by a team of 4. And the whole process was recorded with time-lapse photography for posterity (see below).
The finished cake remained on display until it was cut on Sunday 22nd January by a resident of Milton Keynes sharing the birthday date, and distributed to the public.(http://www.mercerhole.co.uk/news/mercer-hole-chartered-accountants-partner-cuts-mk50-birthday-cake)
